Normally I find books in this genre to have completely kooky & unbelievable. This one surprised me. I really liked Maggie, the main character, because she is discovering new things not only about her sleepy little town but herself as well. All of the characters in this book were interesting. The villain of the mystery was fairly obvious to me, but I really enjoyed it. A great debut to the series. I'm looking forward to reading the rest!

The Trouble With Magic Bewitching Mysteries No 1 Madelyn Alt Books Reviews

This was a cute and interesting cozy read. Maggie hates her job and on a rainy day literally falls into a new one involving being a helper in an enchanted antique store run by a witch. Along the way to discovering her hidden talents is a murder which her new boss is accused of unjustly because of her beliefs and family. Oh the complications a good Catholic girl can get into in this story is funny, and the interesting characters she does meet and just what is her talent? Read and see. It was really good. Enjoyable.
I like these small-town cozies, and I like this one. But I can't relate to these grown women who seem incapable of setting boundaries or demanding to be treated like adults. It seems as if every protagonist in this genre finds it impossible to just say no to her obnoxious, bullying mommy.

For me, at least, it prevents fully identifying with the heroine, because by the time I was pushing 30, I would have had no problem telling my mother that I wasn't ready to bring a man to dinner to meet my family before we had even had our first date.
Maggie O'Neill is unhappy with her job and when she practically falls into an offer to work at an antique store called Enchantments she eagerly agrees. She quickly becomes friends with storeowner Felicity Dow and is intrigued when she finds out that Felicity calls herself a witch. Maggie is just starting to learn the ropes at Enchantments when Felicity's estranged sister Isabella is murdered and the police consider Felicity to be their number one suspect. Maggie doesn't believe Felicity is the killer and sets out to convince the police. But by doing so, she not only risks the wrath of hunky Deputy Tom Fielding, but she's putting herself in danger from a crazed killer.

"The Trouble with Magic" is the very good first book in what looks like a charming series. I love the antique store setting and the magic elements in the book. Author Madelyn Alt does a good job of depicting life in a small town and the many secrets people living there have. Maggie is a good heroine - bored with her job and her life and looking for a change. She's a loyal friend, although I have to admit I wondered why she was so willing to help Felicity when she barely knew her. Felicity too is a great character - although perhaps a little too trusting. Of the other characters Tom Fielding and the mysterious Marcus Quinn stand out. It will be interesting to see how Maggie's relationship with the two of them develops in future books. The magical elements are well done and quite believable. The mystery itself is well plotted, with plenty of suspects, although readers may figure out who the killer is a bit earlier than they would like.

A Charmed Death (Bewitching Mystery, Book 2) is the second book in this bewitching series. Enjoy.
I've been looking for a new paranormal mystery series, and I read good reviews for this one, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into it. I liked the characters well enough, but it was such a slow story. Maggie's paranormal powers were so vague--- she sometimes hears and feels things, but maybe she just imagining it. She has a way of "knowing things" about people, but she doesn't realize who the killer is until it is almost too late. The story didn't really get going until the last quarter of the book, but even that didn't seem realistic. Not as much fun or interesting as other paranormal mysteries like Victoria Laurie's "Psychic Eye" or many others. I won't be reading any more in this series.
All the elements of an urban fantasy were there, but for me it just didn't click. There were too many problems. First, all the 80's references? The lead character, Maggie, is supposed to be late twenties but she watches Magnum PI reruns with her best friend (even though, she admits, most people in "her generation" only know him as Monica's love interest from friends). Later a graduation year of 1988 is mentioned somewhere in the book. That would make her way too old be late twenties, even if it were the date for one of the other characters supposedly around her age. Another character mentions Jessica Fletcher. If I didn't have an aunt that used to love Murder She Wrote, I wouldn't have understood that reference at all. And yes, that charcter was older, but my point is the same. The references are too old for a book set in '06. Yet another thing, Maggie can't afford a cell phone but she has a home phone? Huh? Money spent on a land line that could go toward a cell? Even in 2006 when this was published? Seriously? I think what probably happened was the author wrote the book back in the late-80's to mid-90's and it just didn't get published until '06. That's fine. But why not just set the dating for back then? Make it an 80's era book. That would have kind of rocked. As it is though, it makes the main character seem nerdy and out-of-touch.
Another major problem I had was Maggie's ambivalence toward EVERYTHING--from her beliefs, to her family, to her attractions, to well, you get the point. She doesn't have a strong enough personality or mind for a lead character.
The mystery was easily solved. I would have liked to scream at Maggie several times in the book for missing such obvious key points and then for putting herself in danger (but seeming to think she's clever). As for the romance, while her two potential love-interests had high and low points, Maggie herself was so scattered and ditzy that I couldn't see how anyone would persist to engage her. Of course, neither guy seemed like the sharpest tool in the shed either.
Not the series for me, obviously. I'm glad others got enjoyment out of it. I tried to like the main character, I really did, but just couldn't. I did like the bookstore setting and the idea of an elder witch mentor (although this one seemed a little creepy--and in an old lady creepy way, not an ethereal, cool-creepy way).
