I was so excited to read this novel. I love Alice's Adventure in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass; needless to say, I thought this would be up my alley. I read the reviews on this prior to getting it none of which were good. I just thought people were hating on it because it wasn't in a Lewis Carol or Tim Burton writing style. However, I have to agree now that I read it. It was not enjoyable and felt like a chore to read small 4 page chapters. The Victorian vernacular was lost on me even though I tried to look up references. It did not seem to flow well to keep me interested. In fact, it's a great book to put you to sleep. I didn't get a good sense of the character's personality to feel any attachments to any of them. Believe the reviews when people say author tried too hard.

I have to say that I am so glad that I purchased this book in the audio version as opposed to reading the book myself. The person that was chosen to read the book was unforgettably fabulous. Hearing the way that she gave voice and personality to each character made the book for me. Because the book was written as if it were written at the same time as the original Alice In Wonderland it could have made for tedious reading in some spots, but the narrator made it very enjoyable. I loved it so much that I have already passed it along to a friend and have others inline to borrow it when she is done!
Maguire set the bar for himself with The Wicked Witch, and this one just doesn't add up. I grabbed a copy at the suggestion of a fellow transit rider, wish now I had waited for a copy to show up in the used book store's clearance bin. Alice's friend gets sucked down the rabbit hole and has decidedly different - and mundane - experiences. Cameo appearances by Charles Darwin just can't save this one.
A dense read, and not like most of Gregory Maguire's other books. This one is a bit too cerebral and the antiquated language drags it down. The idea is interesting, and it is perhaps worth it for those interested in England during the nineteenth century, but beyond that it is a bit of a cold retelling.
I never noticed that the witty counterpoint between Alice and the Mad Hatter or Alice and the Caterpillar or Alice and the Cheshire Cat mirrors the formal interaction of British society that characterized Jane Austen. I suppose that it is a literary accomplishment of Mr. McGuire that by intertwining the stories of a girl down a rabbit hole and another navigating awkward social situations that I now cannot deny it. The consequence is that I like the Alice books less than I did before reading After Alice. I am therefore a bit sorry that I read it.
I'm a devoted fan of the Alice books and have read the stories many, many times since childhood. So, I HAD to read this (I'm not a fan of the Oz stories and haven't read Maguire's versions).
The book is plodding a first and in some ways down right dull. There are some real groaners on "puns"; the attempts to bring in famous references from "Alice" seem forced - particularly odd moments of randomly bringing "it's not like a raven or a writing desk". However, about the middle, the book really picks up in interest, pace, and thoughtful word play. The analogy between Oxford and Wonderland never really works for me but the analysis of 1860's Oxford is interesting. There are some very intuitive and beautifully written insights as to the impact of Darwin on Victorian culture, et. al. The ending is surprising and delightful. In short, the book is well worth reading and I highly recommend it.
Gregory Maguire, author of "Wicked," has had the chutzpah to tackle one of the greatest books in the English language. Lewis Carroll's immortal "Alice in Wonderland" has shaped my life and I have no objectivity about it. My only regret is that, in the U.S., boys are not routinely introduced to it. It is a book for adults as well as children, for boys and men as well as for women and girls. It is witty and ironic and has many important things to say about the world. Maguire is up against many challenges in daring to write what amounts to a commentary on its great predecessor. Fortunately he understands Carroll's/Dodgson's masterpiece and wrote his book as homage. Clearly he finds a sympathetic spirit in the gentle mathematician and symbolic logician whose enduring masterpiece has educated so many British intellectuals and leaders.
It's a tough gig to write inside someone else's mythology and I'm sorry to say this book failed for me. The writing was good, but the story was just not there. It was neither an extension of the Alice books nor was it a stand-alone story set in the same universe. And, frankly, it totally failed to bring resolution for two of the major characters -- Siam and his guardian.( Leaving a hole for a sequel? I hope not.) The book itself has many story threads going at once, which is OK as long as they all come back together in the end which I don't feel they really did in this case. The Lewis Carroll characters that showed up in the book didn't feel at all like their originals and the occasional attempts at whimsy seemed forced. There were long sections of the book describing Cambridge street-by-street, landmark-by-landmark that might be fun for people familiar with the town but are as tedious for us Colonials as the travelogue chapters of Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men In a Boat (To Say Nothing of the Dog.)"

I really wanted to like this book. But it defeated me.
