Abraham Lincoln for the Defense by Warren Bull is historical fiction focusing on the period of Lincoln’s life in which he was a young attorney in Springfield, Illinois. It recounts the story of Lincoln defending two men accused of murder. In the Author’s Note at the beginning of the book Mr. Bull states: “…one interpretation of what might have happened…work of fiction…book is based on actual events...legal cases presented are based upon actual cases.”Abraham Lincoln for the Defense reminded me of Leon Uris’s novels in that the culture of the time and place in which the events occurred is described with tangible accuracy; the description of the characters is full-bodied and multi-dimensional; and the dialogue is natural and believable. As I was reading the book I could see and hear the characters in my mind.
Some of my favorite quotes from the book are:
• “In this country we don’t have a king or an aristocracy to tell us what to do. Politics is the responsibility and duty of all of us…imperfect as it is, politics is what we have to work with.”
• “We will not resolve the thorny differences that strain the bonds of brotherhood by polite words over tepid cups of tea. We need the rough-and-tumble exchange of verbal thrust and parry.”
• “…some things legally right are not morally right.”
This book is a good read for anyone, however, history buffs in particular would probably really like this book.

Abraham Lincoln for the Defense Warren Bull Mathew B Brady 9780998454610 Books Reviews
The book reminded me of the Salem Witch Trials. It opened up a time in history when communities were small, people more interconnected and gossip could be virlulent. That role has been taken over by facebook today but you can understand the similarities. The story moved along briskly and I was fascinated to discover moe about young Lincoln as a lawyer.
A very enjoyable read! We all think we know good old Abe, but it's nice to see someone dig a little bit and show us a little more. Human nature is on display here, Lincoln's and that of others. For all his skill at defense, Abe excelled in his knowledge of human nature.
This novel has young attorney Abraham Lincoln, a historical mystery, compelling characters, humor and suspense. The language and descriptions take us back to the 1840s where we meet Lincoln as a young practicing attorney not yet entirely sure of himself but growing into greatness. Lincoln's sadness, humor and humanity all come across. The novel describes a part of Lincoln's life that is not well known. Apparently he practiced law by riding into town, interviewing a prospective client and going to trial all in the same day. The circuit court traveled from town to town around the legal circuit with the judge and the contending attorneys traveling together.
The stories Lincoln told ring true and bring laugh out loud laughter even today. I would like to know which were Lincoln's and which were the author's. The historical events are compelling. A hired hand visiting Springfield with the Trailor brothers vanished. Then Henry Trailor accused his brothers William and Arch of killing the hired hand. Lincoln himself was so taken by the mysteries that followed that he wrote about the events when they happened and he was still writing about them five years later. Lincoln writings are included in appendices. Lincoln was hired to defend the brothers and he brought his senior partner and an accomplished associate into the case for backup.
Meanwhile, fully developed characters pursue their own goals, make personal decisions and face questions that may help or hinder the defense of the Trailor brothers. The trial draws the participants together with threat a double hanging looming in the background.
Even the end of the trial leaves questions unanswered that further events finally help illuminate.
In the author’s notes we learn that five years after he tried this case, Lincoln was still interested enough in it to write a lengthy account of it. (Both of Lincoln’s actual letters about the case are included as Appendices). It’s a fascinating story of a part of Lincoln’s life that is often overlooked in the popular histories. Lincoln was a renowned trial lawyer in his early years, this gives a glimpse of the why and how of his success in a field where a first look at his background and public image would lead one to think he would have been a dismal failure. But what was even more powerful for me was how well the author portrays the dark side of human nature, how ambition, pettiness, and meanness can lead from idle gossip to deadly situations. Frontier America does not shine, there are heroes and villains, of course, but what is unsettling is how easily so much the population is influenced and how weak some of the characters are when they need to be strong. Not the most optimistic picture of young America, or humanity, but a pretty accurate one in many ways.
There are a lot of characters, some well fleshed out and real, some mere caricatures, an unfortunate limitation of writing a complex story with a lot of players. And in some cases, even the caricatures are real, I have known people like that. The ending is enlightening, Lincoln as an excellent trial lawyer and already an accomplished politician. And human, the inconsistencies of his thoughts are just like the rest of us.
The story starts out slow, but there are a lot of characters to get to know and the plot is complex. Bear with it, it picks up pace soon enough.
It was a gift . . . But the recipiant is thrilled and loving it!
